DVD Review - The Shift starring Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

Guest Author - Deanna Joseph

I first discovered Dr. Wayne W. Dyer on Public Television several years ago. Since then I have enjoyed many of his books, along with his Public Television specials!

I recently had the good fortune to receive The Shift, a new DVD starring Dr. Dyer, along with several other familiar faces, including Portia de Rossi and Michael DeLuise.

The Shift is about the shift that takes place within us when we choose to live our lives with meaning, rather than being focused on attaining specific goals before we can be happy. The storyline follows three different groups of people all gathered at the Asilomar Resort in Monterey, California; a married couple who seemed to have lost their spark and gotten caught up a materialistic lifestyle, a devoted wife and mother who seems to have stifled her creative urge in order to please her family, and the camera crew who is filming Dr. Dyer for a documentary.

The interview with Dr. Dyer is the back drop for the whole movie, and weaves through the lives of the two other families, along with the film crew, who find Dr. Dyer's message very thought provoking.

"The real purpose of life is just to be happy, to enjoy your life. To get to a place where you're not always trying to get some place else. So many people spend their lives striving, trying to be some place else that they're not. They never get to arrive." Dr. Dyer.

Through interactions with the wise grounds keeper, a homeless man, and of course, Dr. Dyer, the characters all slowly discover that they are not living authentically, and get to experience their own shift in thinking.

I loved the interviews with Dr. Dyer, especially his story about the apple pie. If you have an apple pie, and cut a piece out of it, what kind of piece of pie is it? Apple, right? Because it came from an apple pie! It couldn't be any other kind of pie. This was such a good reminder for those moments when I believe that something is impossible, or that I'll never be who or what I want to be. I am a small part of the greater part in which there are infinite possibilities! We all are!

The acting is very good and the characters are very likeable, so it's easy to find a bit of ourselves in the movie. The plot is simple and flowing, with just the perfect bit of drama, and runs about two hours.

When I finished watching The Shift I was left with the feeling of hope and inspiration. I was reminded that I am from a Source which knows no limits; we are part of something bigger than we can imagine, and when we surrender to our Source, we allow inspiration to fill us and guide us forward, we open ourselves to allow the experience our own shift.
