Halloween Books for Kids

Guest Author - Taisha Turner

Halloween books for kids celebrate the spooky delight of the holiday. It is the evening when children dress up as witches, goblins, ghosts, princesses and princes. They walk the neighborhood for goodies; have parties in the classrooms and recreation centers. Halloween is fun. Halloween books are fun!

Halloween books are visual, board and picture books contain colorful paintings and sketches. Early readers offer pictures, too, but not as many. They are full of story tales. Some books contain poetry to awaken a child’s imagination. There are spooky books and some not so spooky ones. Audio books packed with sound allow kids to hear and enjoy the creepy sounds associated with Halloween. Many authors write a Halloween story as part of their series. Below is a sample of Halloween books of poetry and stories. Click on Children Halloween Books for many more books of poetry and tales.

Junie B., First Grader: Boo . . . and I Mean It! The early reader book by Barbara Park addresses kids fears about Halloween. Classmates tell Junie B. Jones some tall tales and she is afraid. The book ends well with the first grader receiving candy and no bites. Ages 4-8.

It’s Halloween This a collection of not so-spooky poems by Jack Prelutsky. The short, cute poems are for infants, toddlers and preschool kids’ pleasure. Countdown and Pumpkin are two of the thirteen poems. Ages 0-3. Ages 4-8.

The Secret of Grim Hill Linda DeMeulemeester writes the tween book. The book takes place before Halloween. Spooky activities are happening and revolve around Snookie, Cat Peters’ little sister. Will Cat save Snookie in time? Ages 8-12.

Shake Dem Halloween Bones W. Nikola-Lisa’s picture book contains hip-hop rhymes. The characters are not spooky. They are familiar nursery rhymes’ characters. Kids love to shake their bones to the words and with the characters. It is an interactive book for Halloween exercise and fun. Ages 4-8.

Scary, Scary Halloween Eve Bunting writes the Halloween poetry. Mysterious eyes watch the witches, werewolves and zombies. Parents and teachers have no fear. The eyes belong to a cat watching the trick or treat activities. The monsters are children collecting candy. Ages 0-3. Ages 4-8.

These books are not true Halloween books, but have witches, zombies, mummies and vampires as main characters. They are loaded with adventure and humor. Let your monsters take a delicious bite out of them.

Marvin Monster Series Tabitha Jean D’Agata withes the early chapter books. It involves Marvin Monster, an average student who happens to be a monster. He goes with kids to school who are witches, zombies and other creepy creatures. The children learn about recycling, the post office and the library. Also, they learn important social skills.

Scream Street Books. Tommy Donbavand writes the advanced chapter books or tween series. Luke Watson turns into a werewolf at the age of ten. He and his family is removed to Scream Street. A vampire and a mummy his age joins him on some hilarious adventures as they search for six relics.
