Hemingway Short Stories For Students-Inspirational

Guest Author - Siobhain M Cullen

Short stories for students are most successful when written from the voice of youth and Ernest Hemingway certainly wrote plenty about the trials, tribulations and relationship problems of adolescence. Hemingway is a very popular author with teachers who are delivering the English Language and Literature syllabus, yet he can be more popular still with picky students themselves if the right stories are chosen.

There's little doubt that Ernest Hemingway was a gifted and talented writer and well worth study on the part of the student, but some of his subject matter may seem a little dry to young English students whose lives revolve around fun, relationships and going out socially. In their youthful eyes teens are miles from mid life crises, political debate or retirement.

Young English students may be fascinated however, to learn about the romantic love tribulations of Nick and his long suffering girlfriend Marjorie, of lost friendship issues and the nightmarish scenario of cliquey social dynamics where the hierarchy of popularity is always in a state of flux.

For Hemingway was young too once and all the social anxieties, relationship worries and career plan fears dogged him too.The 'Nick and Marjorie' stories echo many of the traumatic issues of growing up and the Nick Adams stories are well-loved by many fans, but relatively undiscovered by younger readers.

Many critics hold that Hemingway's Nick Adams stories are based on the author's own childhood and adolescence. Putting young English students in tune with a respected author's early writing is a great way of bringing him to life in their eyes and of sparking their interest and curiosity in him as a real life person who was once their age.

Who knows it may even kindle an awareness in them that if Ernest Hemingway could write successfully about his youth then so could they - and that they'd better start to take their writing seriously by keeping a journal!
