Preventing Infant Abductions

Preventing Infant Abductions
Yair Anthony Carillo was just four days young when he was abducted from his home in Nashville Tennessee by Tammy Renee Silas who posed as an immigration agent when she showed up at the baby’s home. The suspect allegedly stabbed the baby’s mother with a knife from the home multiple times before Maria Gurrolla fled the home to get help from her neighbor.

Police are unsure how the attacker chose Yair Anthony Carillo or found the baby’s home, but note that a sign in the front yard announcing “It’s a Boy!” may have played a part in leading the attacker to that particular home. Another theory may be that Maria Gurrolla was spotted by the abductor while with the baby at a local Wal-Mart and may have followed the woman home.

The clue that lead police to Ardmore came after the car a Kia Spector was found on a surveillance video from the superstore. The same Kia Spectra was later seen leaving the baby’s home by the neighbor Maria summoned for help after being stabbed. Another child of Maria’s who is 3 years old was not hurt during the home invasion.

The little boy is safe and after being briefly reunited with his family is being placed in a foster home with his 3 siblings, ages 3, 5, and 11. Authorities are not discussing the reason for placing the children in foster care. The baby had been found in a home in Ardmore Alabama.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) confirms that in areas where migrant workers work this lure has been used before, since it is believed the migrant worker will not notify police for fear of deportation afterwards.

In September, Ryder Miller was one week old when he was abducted from his home in Waco Texas by a family friend. The baby disappeared while his mother slept. She alerted authorities that her son was missing upon awakening and discovering her son missing. Prisscilla Mechell had miscarried recently but continued to deceive her family that she was still carrying a child. Prisscilla Mechell panicked as police focused on her as the prime suspect. That is when Mechell disposed of the boy in a dumpster.

When the baby was found he had hyperthermia, dehydration, and abrasions on both knees, and is going to recover fully. The baby was hospitalized and then reunited with his family. The 25 year old woman was recently charged with the kidnapping and injury of the baby after she admitted to taking the baby to use as her own and wrote in her affidavit “that she would rather that baby died than be caught with him.” Kourtney Miller had only known Prisscilla a short time before the baby was born and kidnapped.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and many hospitals discourage parents of newborns from posting an announcement in the local newspaper or having a “Welcome Home Baby” sign in the home’s front yard. The reason is based on safety concerns that you do not know who may target the family with a newborn. Authorities caution parents with newborns to be careful whom they allow into their home after bringing the baby home from the hospital. There have been cases where an infant was taken while a mother interviewed potential caregivers after placing an ad in their local paper.

Remember to never leave a child unattended with a stranger for even a few minutes. Children are vulnerable and depend on the adults to protect them. People who are family friends may have befriended the pregnant mother with an ulterior motive. Be careful whom you trust with access to your children.
