The Law of Ueki

Guest Author - Lesley Aeschliman

The Law of Ueki is based on a manga series by Tsubasa Fukuchi.

The Law of Ueki is a fighting anime series that revolves around the Battle of the Supernatural Powers. This is a tournament to decide the next god of the Celestial World. There are 100 candidates who must choose a junior high/middle school student to serve as their fighter. The winning God candidate will become the New god of Heaven, while the winning student receives a Blank talent (also known as a Zai), and the talent can be anything that the student chooses.

The main character of the series is Kosuke Ueki. His teacher, Kobayashi, gives Ueki his ability to turn trash into trees. Ueki is a calm person who really doesn't care about what happens to him. However, he is a kind person who tries to help people, and one of his hobbies is helping to clean up the town he lives in. He becomes Kobayashi's fighter in the tournament.

Ai Mori is one of Ueki's classmates, and she discovers his powers early on in the series. She's a usually upbeat and friendly person, but she can also be shallow. She believes that all power-users except for Ueki are dangerous. When she finds out about the competition and how Ueki could lose all his talents and disappear, Ai backs him up.

Kobayashi, who is also known as Mr. K, is a candidate for King of the Celestial World. He's usually a laid-back, forgetful and friendly person. However, he can be quite serious if the situation calls for it. He serves as a mentor and role model for Ueki.

The Law of Ueki ultimately has a set up that is similar to other "fighting anime" series, and is probably most similar to Zatch Bell! However, I think this series contains more swearing than some of the other "fighting anime" series I have seen. While there is no obvious blood or gore in the visuals, some of the language and actions are not appropriate for a younger audience.

Personally, I world recommend The Law of Ueki to anime fans who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
