Book Review Rumi's Little Book of Love

Guest Author - Deanna Joseph

150 Poems That Speak to the Heart
Maryam Mafi and Azima Melita Kolin

I first heard of Rumi, the 13th century mystic and poet, about five years ago. I have many friends who enjoy his poetry, but I’ll admit, the most I knew of him were some quotes that floated around on the internet.

So when I received a copy of some of his “poems that speak to the heart,” (from the publisher) a beautiful compilation done by Maryam Mafi and Azima Melita Kolin, I was excited to learn more about the poetry that my friends had been raving about for years.

Never lose hope, my heart,
miracles dwell in the invisible.
If the whole world turns against you
keep your eyes on the Friend.

What I found is a poetry that is so elegant and delicate that it feels like breathing love.

The King who stole my heart
sent a message with a butterfly.
It said, “I am yours”
and a hundred candles
burst into flame.

The book itself is a lovely, smaller sized hardbound book with crisp, white pages. Some of the poems seem to be written in the original Middle Eastern language of Rumi, alongside the English counterpart. It also has a built in book mark ribbon (I love those) which always give a book a bit of class.

Rumi’s Little Book of Love contains 150 quatrains, and is in three parts, with an introduction.
Part One – The Soul is Our Guide
Part Two – I Threw My Heart to the Winds
Part Three – Spirit is Never Tired of Lovers

It also has a “Terms & Symbolism” section and an index.

What I found through reading the poetry of Rumi is that it actually helps me to alter my state of “being.” It is so much more than just words on a page; these verses speak to the heart and soul about a deeper connection to the Divine. These poems are reminders that we are never who we think we are, but something much greater; and whether we are asleep or awake to the magic of the universe, we are still part of it. We are still beloved by our Creator.

We don’t have the time to spend in “superficial company.” Each moment we are aware of the Beloved is precious, and this book reminds me to be more aware and more connected to those loving energies that are always present around me.

We don’t need to search, we don’t need to journey to a far off place. We are already there.

Where are you going my dear traveler,
longing for the sea like a fish?
You are in my heart wherever you go,
only that sea can quench your thirst. (page 3)
