Anton Chekhov's Best Short Stories From Russia

Guest Author - Siobhain M Cullen

Some of Anton Chekhov's best short stories are now presented on audio CD for all of us to enjoy, whether that's in the car or relaxing with the CD playeer at home. Short Story students will find them great for studying, as some of his most celebrated and most masterful short stories are presented here through the quintessentially English voice of actor Stephen Fry.

Stephen's English accent is so atmospheric and evocative that it sets all the emotions of the stories going and enlivens them with characterization and a little humor.

Those short story fans wanting to research an essay or enter a world where the characterful Stephen Fry reads some of the best short stories of Anton Chekhov will find a great Russia introduction in this easy-to-study Audio CD. A unique English actor's voice and a uniquely individual writing style enhance each other's qualities in the seven best short stories.

The listening experience is unusual to say the least, almost transporting the audience to the icy snow-blasted Victorian streets of Russia. The narrative is pacy and slightly quirky (enhanced by Stephen fry's voice.)The settings are traditional and enjoyably staid in places. The short stories of the Russian playwright and short story writer Anton Chekov are brightly represented here on the Audiobook. Each of the two 2 CD's hold seven stories ( between five to fifteen minutes per story.)One short story is over half an hour in duration.

Themes and titles include an avenger who wishes to punish his disloyal wife by the gun, a huntsman with a doting wife he doesn't like, two prodigal sons with a Gold Rush dream, a street urchin who dreams of the taste of oysters,a couple desperate to plan a scheme to marry off their daughter,a love story about a troubled couple and a dog and a miserably poignant story about a poor cab driver who can find no comfort for his feelings of bereavement among his pushy clients.

Nowadays Chekhov is well known in Russia for the hundreds of short stories he wrote. Many of them are thought to be masterpieces of the short story form. They share with his plays a great influence on Twentieth C literature in their use of narrative, setting, mood, characterization, daily life and a paralysing inertia - to show the fundamental make up of Russian characters.
