First Steps to International Adoption International adoption is wonderful way to start or add to your family. As you prepare to begin your adoption journey, it might be helpful to research the following questions: 1. Which country or countries are you considering for international adoption? 2. How long have international adoptions taken place in these countries? 3. Which United States agencies are accredited in this country or countries? Is this a new or established program? How many years has the agency worked with foreign agencies and organizations in this country? 4. As you interview adoption agencies, you need to find out what other agencies and/or organizations your agency will be working with overseas. As you are researching an adoption agency in the United States, you need to carefully research any foreign agencies or organizations that will be a crucial part of your adoption process. 5. What are some of the potential delays during the adoption process? While no one can accurately predict exactly how long an adoption process will take, it’s important to be aware of any delays that you may face. 6. What paperwork is required for this particular country? How long does it take for documents to become certified overseas? Are there any documents that may need to be renewed or updated during the process? 7. What type of information is available about the children placed for adoption? Do the children live in an orphanage, a foster home, or with a family member? 8. If you travel to pick up your child, what services does your adoption agency provide overseas? Will they help you find an in country pediatrician if needed? 9. What type of accommodations are available during your in country stay? Which accommodations have the most child friendly amenities? 10. What types of post-placement services does your adoption agency provide? After you bring your child home, are follow up reports required, and if so, how often? These questions just skim the surface for those thinking about international adoption. Your adoption agency should have a plethora of information on these questions and many more.
