Chobits Collection

Chobits Collection
The Chobits Collection box set contains seven DVDs of episodes and a music CD. The first six discs contain the main episodes of the series, while the seventh DVD contains the three "clip shows."

The main menu allows you to watch all the episodes or to choose which episode you want to watch. From here, you can also choose your language and subtitle options; you are taken to a menu where you can choose English with subtitles, English without subtitles, or Japanese with subtitles. From the main menu, you can also access the "Extras" menu.

The extras for the first six DVDs include either a version of the opening or the closing credits, an art gallery, trailers, and DVD credits. A mark against the extras menu on the first two DVDs is that in order to choose your selection, you have to highlight green text with green; this made it very hard to read. For the remaining discs, however, you highlight yellow text with green. Also, I thought the art gallery on each disc was a waste (you usually only had five to seven pictures in each gallery; on later discs, at least two or three of the pictures repeated from previous discs).

However, the extras on disc seven include an art gallery, production art, previews for two of the "clip shows," a Chibits special (featuring the characters of Sumomo and Kotoko), as well as trailers and DVD credits. The production art includes 53 pictures, but I wish the pictures had been arranged in more of a logical order; while going through the production art, I felt like I was jumping all over the place.

For the trailers section of each disc, several of the trailers repeated between discs. You didn't have a menu to choose which trailers you wanted to see, so you end up having to play the whole thing and skip over ones you didn't want to see. The trailers section on each disc ran anywhere from eight to 13 minutes. Trailers were included for: Ai Yori Aoshi, Armitage Dual Matrix, Cardcaptor Sakura the Movie 2: The Sealed Card, Gate Keppers 21, Haubane-Renmei, Heat Guy J, I Me My! Strawberry Eggs, L/R, Last Exile, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, Lupin the 3rd, Mahoromatic Automatic Maiden, Mahoro-Matic – Something More Beautiful, Mao-Chan, Master Keaton, Sakura Wars The Movie, Someday's Dreamers, WXIII: Patlabor The Movie 3, and X.

The audio CD contained in the set is called Chobits: Character Song Collection. Tracks one and two are Chi's songs, tracks three and four are Hideki's songs, tracks five and six are Minoru and Yuzuki's songs, tracks seven and eight are Hibiya's songs, tracks nine and 10 are Shinbo and Sumomo's songs, tracks 11 and 12 are Yumi's songs, and the final track is a duet between Hideki and Chi (this is the duet that appears in the ending credits of the final episode). On the disc, I recognized most of the songs from the show, except for three of the vocal songs and one of the instrumentals. The biggest disappointment for me was that the theme song from the opening credits wasn't included on the CD.

If you're a fan of Chobits, this box set is definitely worth it. Not only can you get the seven DVDs in one set for a cheaper price than buying those same discs individually, but you also get the bonus CD. Even with the set's shortcomings, I would still recommend it.

I wrote this review after watching a copy of this DVD box set that my husband and I purchased.
