Do Not Call!  Next June fifty million Americans will find their numbers purged from the Do Not Call Registry unless they resign up. Rep. Mike Doyle has introduced legislation that will make the Do Not Call List permanent. Fiscal Responsibility Returns to Congress  It was the second day Democrats controlled Congress; they wasted no time restoring the pay-go rules. Just as ordinary American do every month, the Congress will have to look at its bills, the money it wants to spend and figure out how to pay for it
For Sale Sign on Congress.  Placing a for sale sign on the nations capitol is what federal prosecutors accused Duke Cunningham of in his sentencing memorandum. For almost a decade, Former Congressman Duke Cunningham accepted millions of dollars in exchange for awarding defense appropriations.
Is Washington DC to Immoral for Minors?  Maybe Washington DC should be a zone free of minor children. After all we pass laws to forbid minors from unsafe environments. At the very least the Page program should not continue unless we can guarantee the safety of every Page from predators. John Edwards Speaks on Moral Leadership  November, 4th, 2006, I was fortunate enough to hear John Edwards speak at Pasadena Californias All Saints Episcopal Church. While not declaring his own candidacy for the 2008 presidential campaign, he did speak about the challenges facing the next president. Profiles in Courage  In 1989, President Kennedys family created an award to recognize the qualities of political courage that the book,Profiles in Courage,lauded. The 2006 recipients of the Profiles in Courage award are U.S. Representative John Murtha and Alberto Mora.
Prosecutorial Purges  Last year congress passed a little noticed provision in the patriot act that gave the U.S. attorney general the authority to appoint interim U.S. attorneys indefinitely without Senate approval. What has happened since this provision was passed is prosecutorial purges at an unprecedented rate. Government should be like a good lover in that it gives you your space, but is there when you need them, has good credit and a good body, and is honest and open. Sunshine Week  Laws that allow us access to government papers are known as Sunshine Laws.
When you live in a representative democracy, sunshine laws are very important. They provide us with the information we need to evaluate are leaders, so we can make informed decisions when we vote.
The Common Good  We go to the polls this November to choose a new Congress. This past session we have seen member after member of Congress investigated, indicted, tried, resign, many leaving for alcohol rehab or jail. These are the people we choose to represent us. The Hatch Act  If you have following the scandals out of Washington, you might have heard the Hatch Act. Violations the Hatch Act seem to be underlying many of the scandals hitting the nightly news. The Hatch Act was first passed in 1939 in response to concerns about the political activities of federal employees. The Brennan Center for Justice studied these voting systems and identified one hundred and twenty potential threats to these systems and specific countermeasures and remedies to these threats.

Vermont, Kucinich, and Rosie O'Donnell  On April 24, 2007, presidential hopeful Dennis J. Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney. While Kucinich could find no one to co-sponsor his articles of impeachment, he is not alone in calling for the impeachment of Cheney. Who are Our Most Corrupt Lawmakers?  CREW, the non-profit legal watchdog group that is dedicated to holding public officials accountable for their actions, has released their third annual report on the most corrupt members of Congress. While the list is heavily Republican, Democrats do not escape unscathed. Why Tuesday?  Why do we vote on Tuesdays? The US Constitution does not mandate that federal elections take place on Tuesday. In 1845 federal law established Election Day as the Tuesday after the first Monday of November. Your Piece of Silver  Reach in your pocketbook, take out a nickel. Look at it; look at it hard, for it is your piece of silver. It is what we would not pay to repair the roads and bridges, including the bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis; a vetoed five-cent gas taxes would have repaired the roads and bridges.
