God Disrupted My Plans
How often do I push a niggling question to the sidelines, when the Lord wants to answer it?
I woke up this morning with a full to-do list on my mind. But the rain was pouring down. I had plans to get out early and walk the dog before I set about accomplishing all my other tasks. I had plans to work in the yard. I had plans to visit several stores and shop for necessary items. There would also be housecleaning and laundry.
Hearing rain pounding on the roof, the dog stayed curled up in her bed, even after I filled her food bowl.
The heavy cloud cover kept the light dim in the house. The atmosphere was quiet, peaceful. I sat in my chair watching streams form in the lawn, and wondering what to do with that to-do list and my plans.
Sometimes—okay ALWAYS—God has a better plan. Being a good Christian woman, I’d allowed for time in my day to spend with the Lord. It would be short, because I would have a busy day. I’d planned to read a devotion—one page—then contemplate on the bible verse and its meaning.
But the rain came to delay my schedule. I read my one-page devotion, and having more time than I’d planned, I picked up my bible and looked up the verse discussed. That verse led me to read several verses before and several after the designated text. Spending the extra time with the Spirit, an answer came to a problem that had been plaguing me. A dilemma I’d tucked away, determined to ignore it until it vanished on its own, because I had many other things on my schedule. And, truthfully, I thought I could handle it on my own.
How many times have I rushed through my day, ignoring a question the Lord wants to answer? This time, he made me sit down and listen to him.
Lord, thank you for the rain that quiets the noise of the outside world and stalls my plans.
“Ask rain from the Lord in the season of the spring rain, from the Lord who makes the storm clouds and he will give them showers of rain, to everyone the vegetation in the field.” Zechariah 10.5 ESV
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21 ESV
