Case Closed The Last Wizard of the Century

Case Closed The Last Wizard of the Century
Case Closed: The Last Wizard of the Century is the third film released for the Case Closed anime franchise. The film, which was directed by Kanetsugu Kodama, was released to Japanese theaters on April 17, 1999. FUNimation Entertainment, which holds the North American distribution rights for the film, released it on DVD on December 29, 2009.

The Last Wizard of the Century opens with Kaito Kid sending a cryptic message about what his next target is. The police deduce that he is after a recently discovered Faberge egg that belonged to Nicholas II of Russia, which is set to be displayed in the Suzuki Modern Art Museum. The police have asked Richard/Kogoro to assist on the case. Harley/Hattori also finds a way to involve himself with the case. On the night of the heist, Kaito Kid is successful in getting the egg; however, he is shot down by an unknown assailant and falls into the sea.

Conan, Rachel/Ran, and Richard/Kogoro board a boat for Tokyo. Joining them are a freelance photographer covering the egg, the great-granddaughter of a man who worked in Faberge's factory, as well as several parties who are interested in getting a hold of the egg for various reasons. After one of the passengers is murdered, Conan figures out there's more going on than initially meets the eye. He must try to unravel the various threads and figure out the truth before it's too late.

I thought there was a very interesting premise for this film, especially with tying the story in with the Romanav family. Unfortunately, about eight years after this film was released, a discovery was made in regards to the fate of a couple of the Romanav family members that make a revelation that's made in this film impossible. However, it's hard to fault the film for this, since it was made before that discovery. I do find it interesting, however, that The Last Wizard of the Century came out only two years after 20th Century Fox's Anastasia was released; that was another film that dealt with the Romanav family.

The only "extra" included on this DVD were trailers for other properties that FUNimation was promoting at the time the company released The Last Wizard of the Century.

Case Closed: The Last Wizard of the Century is probably one of the better films I have seen for the Case Closed franchise so far. If you're a Case Closed fan that wants to have everything that FUNimation has released for the series, then you need to add this DVD to your home video collection.

I wrote this review after watching a copy of this film that my husband purchased and gave to me as a gift.
