When FUNimation released Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, it was released on both DVD and Blu-ray disc. This review focuses on the Blu-ray pressing of the film.

This film is essentially a point-to-point re-telling of the first six episodes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion television anime series. Shinji Ikari arrives in Tokyo-3 while it is under attack by the fourth Angel. When Shinji goes to see his estranged father, Gendo, Shinji learns that he's been chosen to pilot the Evangelion Unit-01. Shinji resists at first, but when he sees how injured Rei Ayanami, the other pilot is, Shinji gets into the unit and fights the fourth Angel. This film focuses on Shinji's struggles with whether or not he wants to pilot the Eva unit, and there are also battles with the fifth and sixth Angels.

Overall, I think this section of the story works better in this film version than it did in the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series. The biggest issue I had with the original series was the fact that there were times that it felt bogged down by sluggish pacing. In this film version, the action and story seem to move at a more natural pace.

The Blu-ray pressing of Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone comes with a booklet. It opens with a piece written by Hideaki Anno that explains why he decided to re-tell the story of Neon Genesis Evangelion as a series of feature films. From here, there are pieces that introduce the film and explain the "rebuild" concept. There is also an explanation of the "Rebuild of Evangelion 1.01" feature that appears on the disc as an extra. There are also pages dedicated to explaining animation production terms, the characters, and words association with Evangelion.

When it comes to the video quality of this Blu-ray, I noticed a significant difference between the image quality on this disc and the image quality on the DVD of this film that I had viewed previously. According to the back of the box, the video is 1080p High Definition 16x9, the audio is Dolby TrueHD: English 6.1 and Dolby TrueHD: Japanese 6.1, and subtitles are available in English.

All of the bonus features that were included on the DVD pressing are also on this Blu-ray disc. Out of curiosity, I checked the two versions of "Rebuild of Evangelion 1.01" on the Blu-ray, since they appeared to be mislabeled on the DVD pressing. I'm happy to say that the two versions on the Blu-ray were actually labeled correctly; the Shiro Sagisu version has music that sounds like it came straight out of the film, and the Joseph Maurice-Ravel version has the orchestral sound that you would associate with Ravel.

There is also the "Angel of Doom" promotional music video, two television trailers for the film, three theatrical trailers for the film, and trailers for releases that FUNimation was promoting at the time that this Blu-ray disc was released.

This film really should be in the home video library of anyone who already enjoys Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you want to add this film to your collection and you have Blu-ray capability, then I would highly recommend getting the Blu-ray pressing of the film.
