Character Memory Verse

Character Memory Verse
My memory verse is Colossians 3:12. Here it is in the King James Version:
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
You may want to find this verse in your favorite Bible translation and commit it to memory.

This is what Paul is saying to me:

Paraphrasing:
Since I have been chosen by God—he chose me, loves me, and saved me from a life of sin and death, (I didn’t do anything to deserve it,) Paul says to put on—just like putting on clothes, because these aren’t natural traits for me:
  • Compassion

Compassion is defined as a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune. This is accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate that suffering. Looking at the KJV passage, this compassion comes from deep within me.

Synonyms of compassion are: mercy, empathy, kindness, and sympathy.

  • Kindness
Being kind is defined as being indulgent, considerate, or helpful. It is also referred to as humane.

Synonyms of kindness are: affection, courtesy, decency, grace, understanding, and unselfishness.

  • Humility
Humility is the quality or condition of being humble. It is having a modest opinion or estimate of my own importance.

Synonyms for humility are meekness, obedience, and submissiveness.

  • Meekness
Being meek is defined as being humbly patient or docile when provoked by others.

Synonyms for meek are unassuming, deferential, and gentle.

  • Patience
Patience is defined as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, or irritation.

Patience is also the ability and willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when I’m confronted with a delay.

Synonyms are: composure, endurance, humility, restraint, and self-control.

You may have noticed the character traits on this list have similar meaning. Maybe Paul repeated himself because he wanted his readers to get it.
This is a good memory verse for me because I need reminding every day—when petty annoyances get in the way of my plans. In my naturally self-centered state, I need reminding that being like Jesus is being compassionate, kind, humble, meek, and patient.

Want to spread the word of Jesus’ love? Putting on the character of Jesus is the best way to draw people to him. When I meet those who don’t know Jesus, I hope they will see traits in me that aren’t common in the world. They will see how he has changed me, and turn to him for that kind of relief.
