Make Your Own Substitutes for Milk & Egg Products

Sweetened Condensed Milk

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup + 2 T. powdered non-fat dry milk

Preparation -
This recipe makes an amount equal to one can of sweetened condensed milk. Mix all the ingredients together in a saucepan. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat slightly and cook, stirring constantly, for about 15 more minutes or until smooth and thickened.




Sour Cream Substitute
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 T. lemon juice
  • 1 cup cottage cheese

Preparation -
Place the ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until smooth and well blended.




Egg Substitute

  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 tsp. nonfat dry milk
  • 1 drop yellow food coloring (optional)

Preparation -
Mix together until well blended. Use as a low cholesterol alternative for one whole egg
