2011 Hall of Fame Nominees Include Donovan
The 2011 nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced, and many classic rockers are among them. One of the best known of the hippie folk rockers, Donovan, has been nominated. His bet-known songs include "Sunshine Superman," "Mellow Yellow," "Catch the Wind" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man."
Another well-known classic rocker, Neil Diamond, is also up for consideration. The singer/songwriter began as a songwriter, writing the Monkees hit "I'm a Believer." By 1966, he started performing and releasing his own songs, including "Cherry Cherry."
Alice Cooper released his first album in 1969 and has never stopped recording. Alice Cooper classics like "School's Out" have remained rock anthems for decades. His nomination comes as he is working on a 2011 album, "Welcome 2 My Nightmare." It is his 19th solo album.
The J. Geils Band "centerfold," the band's 1981 hit, is the band's best-known work, but the band has been recording since 1970 and has released 15 albums.
Laura Nyro played at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 when she was just 19. The year before, she released her first album and began her 25-year recording career. She became well-known in 1968 for her song "Eli," and began recording songs that were covered again and again by some of the biggest names in music in the 60s and 70s. Three Dog Night, Blood, Sweat and Tears and Barbra Streisand all found success in covers of her songs.
Anytime the Rock and roll Hall of Fame nominees are announced, there are questions about why certain artists were included and why other eligible performers were not nominated. Kiss and Rush have both been eligible for nomination for more than 10 years. Both bands are super groups with long recording histories and legions of rabid fans. The Smiths, Grand Funk Railroad, the Moody Blues and Yes are all eligible and all were snubbed this year. Perhaps some of the bands that fans would like to see nominated have smaller, niche audiences, Kiss and Rush excluded, but then consider that LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys were nominated this year.
