The 26th Great American Beer Festival 2007 - held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado, USA - runs Thursday October 11, Friday October 12 and Saturday October 13, 2007. As the largest ticketed beer festival in the USA, it is the premier competition for the brewers of commercial beer.

Make a plan to get the most out of tasting your share of the 1,650 beers available on the festival floor. Outside the festival entrance, the action begins with a ribbon cutting and toast by Scott Kerkmans, Four Point's and the World's first Chief Beer Officer. Then Scott dons a kilt to lead a parade of bagpipers to the festival grounds. On Saturday, October 27th, 2007, Allentown Brew Works hosts a Temptation Halloween Dinner at 8:00 p.m. , followed by a Seasonal Party benefiting St. Luke's Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA.

The themed, prix fixe dinner showcases three "hot" courses that will bring out the devil in you. Course one centers around the tale of Persephone, an innocent maiden abducted by Hades. Course two has three acts - Arcadia, the Gospel of Witches; Prince of Caps, a Tarot-related tale in which the Prince of Caps is a man or woman with overpwering sexual and emotional charisma; Lucifer, the "light bearer" - the fallen archangel. Course three is centered around Anne Boleyn, the beautiful and delicate queen who was beheaded on false charges. Each course promises to be a gustatory delight. Reservations are required. Tickets are $40, and include free admission to the party that follows.

The Party heats up all four levels of the Allentown Brew Works with a carnival-like atmosphere. The Dark Art Gallery overshadows two floors. DJ's keep the action going in the Hamilton Room and in Silk, the Lower Lounge. A live band, Aardvarks, performs in High Gravity. Hors d'oeuvres and pastries flow with constancy, while judges search the crowd to present "Best Costume" prizes. The Biergarten features a smoking parlor, complete with cigars and hookahs! Donations of $20 will be collected at the door.

Craft Beer of the Week Award

Matilda - Goose Island, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Style - Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Goose Island Matilda is a cleanly aromatic Belgian ale with complex layers of apricots, leather, flowers, clover, and spice. It pours a hazy amber with hints of orange. A voluminous orange-tan head dominates the glass like the pouf on a root beer float, and is slow to settle. Dipping a finger into the head releases additional aromas of apricot. Flavors titillate the tongue with spices that could conquer Hannibal’s army, while apricots, orange, and a shadow of citrus float through it all. Some flowery notes emerge, with a sliver of leather and horse blanket. Distinctive Belgian yeast has a way of creating magic like this. Light carbonation adds to the zest.

Matilda possess hidden powers within the bottle. These emerge as young palatial delights, but may be aged in a temperature and light controlled beer cellar for further development of gustatory pleasure. As they age, the flavors will become smoother and more rounded or may take on a sherry-like character. Delightful!
