Allergies and Colds

May 22 2008 Allergies and Colds Newsletter

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. It's the perfect time to open up a dialogue with friends, family members and co-workers about allergies.

According to a recent survey, many in the general public don't see allergies as a serious health concern. Some believe that allergy sufferers overstate the severity of their symptoms and use them as an excuse to get out of something. Allergy sufferers (74 percent) perceive that their allergies aren't even taken seriously by doctors.

The survey, entitled "Attitudes About Allergies," brings to light many misconceptions about allergies as well as the emotional toll of the condition. Six in ten allergy sufferers said that their symptoms impact their mood; 51 percent feel annoyed; 48 percent irritable; and 42 percent feel frustrated by their allergies.
