Senior Living

May 26 2008 Senior Living Newsletter

It is a solemn weekend in the United States as we observe Memorial Day and remember those men and women who have stood in harm's way to protect the rights and privileges we enjoy here. These rights and privileges must be very important if so many people around the world want to come here to live, to the land of milk and honey. But rights and privileges are not without their prices.

What child didn't hear their mothers say things like, "Count your blessings instead of your troubles and you may find you are very fortunate indeed"?

This evening, Sunday, May 25, 2008, my husband and I walked downtown. At 10 p.m. the American Legion marched from the Legion Hall to the Erie Station Museum where they were joined by the Lisbon Community Choir to sing a selection of patriotic and military songs. Citizens gathered around the singers and when the 21 gun salute popped and Taps began to be played, I wonder what was going through the minds of the other observers? My eyes wandered to Old Glory waving with the breeze. And I thought about how much it means to me to be able to walk down the street in my town unaccosted. How much it means to me to be able to stand in a public place with my hand over my heart and thank God for letting me live here.

Wherever you are, I wish you Godspeed and blessings.
