An Irish Ghost Story

This story happened a while ago in Dublin, and even though it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, its true (of course)!

John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was walking on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dreary dark night and in the midst of a big storm. The night was growing longer and no car was in sight. The wind and rain from the storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. He was cold, wet and miserable.

Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door...only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on.

The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared out of no where through the window and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.

Shortly thereafter, John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had. A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying and . . . wasn't drunk.

Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other...

"Look Paddy......there's the bloomin' idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!"

Stats from the Brewers Association for the first half of 2009 report that growth among America's small and independent craft brewers continues, even while the rest of the economy is suffering. Dollar growth from craft brewers during the first half of 2009 increased 9%, and volume of craft beer sold grew 5% for the first six months in 2009. The numbers, although not quite as high as 2008 growth, are impressive in an economy that has purse-strings drawn tight on consumer spending in other sectors.

Craft Beer of the Week Award

Pilgrims Dole, New Holland Brewing Company, Holland, Michigan, USA
Style: Wheat Wine - 10.00% ABV

Crafted of 50% barley and 50% wheat, this wheat wine gleams orange-copper in the glass, with a thick head of cream. Aged in Dragon's Milk barrels, it emits aromas of oranges, pineapple, untoasted malt, and earth. On the palate, caramel merges with succulent fruit, with the breadiness of a morning breakfast cake. Effervescence pleases the mouth while ever present heat and spice awaken the taste buds. Malt continues into the finish. Wonderful!
