GERMANY'S WHITE ASPARAGUS SEASON, SPARGELZEIT
Harvested and thoroughly enjoyed throughout Germany for two months from around the middle of April until June 24th, St. John the Baptist’s feast day, 'Spargel' are a symbol of spring to many Germans, and ‘Spargelzeit’ is the much anticipated 'White Asparagus Season'.
The white spears are considered a delicacy and quite an expensive one, so they are still known by their original, and in those days absolutely accurate, nickname of ‘The Royal Vegetable or ‘Das Koenigliche Gemuese’.
