The Sustenance of God's Word, the Bible

Are you feeling unsatisfied? After achieving everything you need and everything you want, do you ask, "Is this all there is?" There is something more. True contentment comes from God's word.
Matthew 4:4
But Jesus told him, The Scriptures say,
'People need more than bread for their life;
they must feed on every word of God.

God's word is given to us in the Bible.
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.

Feeding implies a daily supply. The best way to do this is to develop a discipline of Bible study. It may not be easy to make time for daily Bible reading. You may have to set priorities by avoiding some distractions, such as television or determine to get up half an hour earlier.
"Feed on God's word" by following these tips to develop a habit of quiet time.
  1. Choose a specific place. It should be comfortable, quiet and away from distractions.
  2. Select a time. Think of it as appointment with God and show up.
  3. Find a Bible that is easy for you to read. You may want to try one of the new translations in today's language. When I quote scripture in this site, I use the New Living Translation. One of the most widely used translations is the New International Version or you may want to use the translation that is used in your church.
  4. Be sure to have a notebook and pen available.
  5. When you arrive for your appointment with God, take a minute to ask Him to show you something from His word.
  6. Read a portion of scripture. For some it may be one or two verses, for others it may be a chapter. Think about what it means to you. Can you apply it to your life today? Write down your thoughts in your notebook, noting the verse.
    • Reading plans - You may find it helpful to use a structured reading plan such as a 'read the Bible in a year' plan. Ask your pastor for suggestions.
    • Study books -- Your local Christian bookstore has books to help you. There are guides for the study of one particular book of the Bible or a particular aspect of life, such as depression, motherhood, spiritual growth, etc. The number of books may be overwhelming so ask for help.
    • Click here for my suggested reading, found easily at Amazon.com.

  7. After your study, take a few minutes to sit quietly and let God speak to you.
  8. Don't become discouraged. Keep showing up for your daily appointments. God will honor your commitment.
  9. You will soon develop a craving for God's word.

1 Peter 2:2,3
You must crave pure spiritual milk so that you can grow into the fullness of your salvation. Cry out for this nourishment as a baby cries for milk, now that you have had a taste of the Lord's kindness.
