Types of Mountain Bike Racing
There are a number of different types of mountain bike racing. The Racing ranges from cross-country mountain biking, to downhill racing and even marathon and enduro racing. Discover more about a few of the different types of mountain bike races in this short guide.
Cross Country (XC) Racing
Cross Country mountain bike racing covers varying terrain from gravel track to more rocky areas. Typically the circuit is often 6-8 km in length and pro races lap up totalling to up to 30 miles depending on the course. The start of the races is always a mass start and with the UCI’s new 2006 rules in place, at certain points on the course if riders fall into trouble with their bike there are technical pit stops where the team’s mechanics are on hand to help fix any problems but only at these designated stops. Riders can’t get any technical help from their team mechanics anywhere else on the course so they need to drag their bike to the nearest stop, but the team’s other riders are allowed to stop and give their team-mates assistance at any point in the course to help fix any problems.
Downhill
As the name suggests downhill racing is done downhill! The terrain is much rougher than a typical cross-country circuit, and requires a bike with a good amount of suspension and often the reliability of disc brakes too. Downhill racing is a very fast event, is normally done as a time trial event lasting from only 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on the course. The quickest downhill rider with the lowest time wins the event.
Freeride
The freeride race is based upon the rider with the greatest control over their bike not just on their reliability of speed in the course. For freeride, there are a number of routes a rider can take through the course to finish. Often a course will have any number of obstacles, drops, ramps, cliffs, etc. that will need negotiating around all which require the rider to demonstrate their fluidity of riding in combating these obstacles.
Marathon (MT) Racing
One of the most gruelling kinds of mountain bike racing, this type of race typically covers distances of 45-100km of mountainous terrain. Race distances that exceed 100km are then called ultra-marathons! One of the most physically demanding of the mountain bike races, Marathons run from point to point, where by the riders travel from a mass start point A to the finish, point B.
Enduro (ND) Racing
Enduro mountain bike racing is one of the newer forms of racing. Here riders are typically categorized for the race, such as solo, team, pair, mixed team (male and female), etc. Only one member of the group can ride the course at any one time. Races last between 12-14 hours, and the winners of the race depend on how many laps have been taken during that time.
