Your risk for heart disease increases after menopause. Heart disease accounts for 50% of deaths in postmenopausal women (as compared to breast cancer, which accounts for only 1%). Are you more worried about breast cancer than you are heart disease?
You can ward off both after menopause by switching to a healthier lifestyle. The best ways to reduce both risks is to:
* Stop smoking
* Maintain a weight similar to what you weighed in high school
* Exercise at least 5 times a week
* Eat a low-fat diet, but especially avoid saturated fats from animal products (meat, cheese, chicken and turkey skin, whole milk--and use soy cheese and soy meats and soy milk instead) and trans-fats from partially hydrogenated oils. (Check labels of any processed foods to find out if partially hydrogenated oils are listed. Don't buy those that do.) Use olive oil for cooking and salad dressing.
* Learn how to reduce your stress
* Maintain a normal blood pressure; 120/80 is a normal blood
pressure; by losing weight, eating right and exercising you can lower your blood pressure
