Megan McDonald writes Stink Solar System Superhero(Stink Book #5). Peter H. Reynolds illustrates the superhero’s early reader chapter book. Candlewick Press’s hardback edition has one hundred and twenty pages divided into nine chapters. They intend Stink Moody books for early, elementary kids making the transition from picture to chapter books. Great for students in the first, second and third grades.
In Stink Solar System Superhero by Megan McDonald, Stink has a new cause. The former planet, Pluto, is the underdog this time. It lost its planet status! A dwarf planet! Why is Pluto not respected? Is it because it is so small? Well, no one is going to scorn Pluto while Stink is around. Stink and his gang, the Underdogs, study planet status requirements. The Underdogs and the opposing group give lively class presentations stating the pros and cons of Pluto as a planet. Will Class 2D vote Pluto as a full-fledged planet?
Megan McDonald writes another great Stink Moody book. She presents both sides of the Pluto debate in terms children can understand. Also, simultaneously, kids learn about the current eight planets in the solar system. Each of the nine chapters ends with fun facts. The facts cover a different planet in the solar system starting with Venus. Best of all, juvenile readers have a good time reading about the children in Stink’s second grade class.
Each second grade student has a distinct personality. The classmates are from different ethnic groups and so are the adults. Part of the appeal of the Stink Moody series, is the language Megan McDonald gives her characters. They talk as second graders, no stilted English, but slang terms and all. Don’t worry parents. The language is clean.
