Menopause and Weight Gain

Women and weight issues go hand in hand. Whether we are thin or overweight, we spend too much time focused on what the scale says. For many of us, our days begin and end with stepping on the scale to measure how we did for the day. As we get older, this becomes more of a challenge. Our bodies are changing and the waist we knew in our twenties is gone.

During menopause years, women gain weight easier and it seems to settle in the mid-section. Our clothes don’t fit as well as before and this is because our aging bodies are not metabolizing like when we were younger. Our hormone levels are different than before. Women who are experiencing perimenopause experience fluctuating estrogen levels. Those women who are in the middle or end of menopause, their estrogen levels have fallen off.

Estrogen is found in fat and when your estrogen levels drop off your body will naturally cling to any fat cells it can get to obtain the levels of estrogen it needs in the body. This is when weight gain happens. During this time, it is important to keep your estrogen levels operating at even levels to eliminate weight gain.

Another reason for gaining weight during the menopause years is because of stressors from being overworked, fatigue, and emotional issues. All of these can lead to a metabolism change. Learning to deal with your issues can help decrease weight gain.

If you are looking for treatments for menopausal weight gain, there are a few things you can do: make simple lifestyle changes or consider alternative medicines.

Making some changes in your lifestyle may help control weight gain or even cause you to lose weight. Take an assessment of your life and discover what is not working and eliminate negative stressors in your life. You may see a change in the way your body functions as stress can wreck havoc on your hormone levels.

Choose to eat estrogenic foods that will help equalize your dropping estrogen levels: Soy, rice apples, and potatoes. Start a daily exercise regime to get your metabolism going. Do a few things for your 'self' during menopause.

Herbal remedies have been known to help during menopause. Black Cohosh and Dong Quai contain natural estrogenic from plants. If you are looking to replace some of your low estrogen levels, these herbs may do that. Keep in mind that your body may become dependent on these extra estrogens and may begin to produce less estrogen on their own.

A combination of lifestyle change and herbal remedies may bring your estrogen levels into balance and make a difference in your weight.
