Halloween Picture Books for Pre-School Kids

Guest Author - Alice Andersen

Reading to a child has to be one of the all-time best things in life. For Halloween time, or anytime, the four books listed here are sure to be award winners for the adult to read and share with a child. The illustrations are fun. The books all use simple creative rhymes or repetitive wording. The writing sends the child on lively adventures with monsters, witches, and ghosts using language they can enjoy, remember, and repeat. The stories are positive and revolve around cooperation and friendship.

Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman – This is a wonderfully illustrated picture book with a repetitive storyline for children to enjoy. A witch grew a big pumpkin and wants to make a pumpkin pie. But the pumpkin is so big she can’t get it off the vine. A vampire, a mummy, and a ghost all try to move the pumpkin but they can’t move it either. This is a friendly story of monsters working together to help the witch.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson – Another book for Halloween, or any time, is this story of a witch who keeps losing things while flying around on her broom. Animals on the ground find them and ask politely for a ride on her broom. This story of friendship and cooperation is told in the form of a fun rhyme that adults enjoy reading aloud and kids enjoy hearing.

The Little Old Lady Who was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams – The little old lady on a walk through the woods finds animated pieces of clothing along the way. Each piece of clothing makes a sound such as clump, clump for the shoes and wiggle, wiggle for the pants. There is repetition in the verse in a fun and entertaining way for both the adult and the children. This is a delightful book for some Halloween fun.

Where’s My Mummy? by Carolyn Crimi – For the young ones who enjoy monsters, this is another fun story for the Halloween season. Little Baby Mummy plays hide-and-shriek with Big Mama Mummy. He starts the game by hiding in the cemetery and meets all sorts of monsters causing more giggles than scares. The charming illustrations and silly rhymes match the fun of the Halloween season.
