Hugh Michael Jackman was born in Sydney, Australia on October 12, 1968. He is best known as an actor and producer of film, theater, and television.
Although living in Ausralia, both of Jackman’s parents were English. He was the youngest of five children from that marriage. His parents separated when he was eight and his mother moved back to England. Jackman and his siblings were raised by his father. She remarried and had another child.
As a child Jackman enjoyed the outdoors and sports. He went on camping trips and enjoyed the beach. He played rugby and cricket in school as well as swimming and high jumping.
Jackman studied at the University of Technology in Sydney and graduated with a BA in communications in 1991. In his final year he took a drama course for extra credits and reaffirmed how much he enjoyed performing. After obtaining his BA he took a one year course at the Actors’ Guild. From there he studied at the “Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts” and graduated in 1994.
On the night of his graduation Jackman got his first job offer. It was for a 10 part drama series on ABC called “Correli”. The show only lasted one season, but he met his future wife, Deborra Lee Furness on this set. He has been working nonstop ever since his graduation.
In 1998 Jackman took his first role out of Australia. He played Curly in London’s production of “Oklahoma!” and he played in the film version the following year.
In 1999 Jackman was cast as Wolverine in the “X-Men” Series. He was forced to portray a myriad of emotions with very little lines. He had to “muscle up” for the film, and was almost a foot taller than the character he was portraying. He was filmed at unusual angles and his co workers wore platform shoes to compensate for the height difference.
In 2004 Jackman won the Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical in the musical “The Boy from Oz”. In 2003, 2004, and 2005 he hosted the Tony Awards and received rave reviews for his job well done.
In 2005 Jackman formed a production company called “Seed Productions”. And in 2008, Jackman received the honor of being named the "Sexiest Man Alive" from "People" Magazine.
Jackman and his wife had two miscarriages. Following that, they adopted two children: Oscar was born May 15, 2000, and Ava was born July 10, 2005.
