REVEAL by Meggan Watterson - a Review

Guest Author - Lauren D´Silva

If you are looking for a kindred spirit along the path of your spiritual journey you may enjoy REVEAL. Reading about Meggan’s experiences could be reassuring for a woman who is experiencing spiritual unfolding without a supportive teacher, friend or group to turn to.

REVEAL has the subtitle ‘A Sacred Manual for Getting Spiritually Naked’. I found this less a how-to manual and more a book of memoirs containing reflections on the lessons learned along the way. The book is organised into ‘seven veils’. In theory you would reach the end of the book whipping away your seventh veil to be revealed spiritually naked with nothing left to divide you from the experience of your Self. You’ll need to do more than just passively read the book to accomplish that of course! Be prepared to engage proactively if you want to release your own obscuring veils!

REVEAL is predominantly an autobiographical account of the author’s many spiritual experiences and insights, including pilgrimages to the sites of the Black Madonna. I found both the content and style easy and interesting to read and would like to go and visit some of the sacred sites described one day. Meggan is coming from a Christian spiritual heritage but has opened to the Sacred Feminine from other traditions and speaks of Green Tara, Kali and meeting Amma the hugging saint.

I found myself agreeing with almost everything Meggan says. You do need to strip back the societal patterns and attitudes that veil your true Self and hide it away. This outlook is very much in harmony with my own teaching that you need to get to a point where you look can within, connect to your whole Self and find that you really love yourself totally no matter what the outside world judges you to be.

The last chapter ‘Benediction’ is worth reading and rereading. It is an affirmation that you are truly a mystical being, a soul who is worthwhile, loveable and whole:

I want you to be able to take the voice of your soul, the voice of love within you, as the ultimate authority in your life, especially when someone else is imposing their version of what’s highest or best for you. I want you to be able to remain calm, look them square in the face, and simply say, “Thank you for your advice or your [fill in the blank], but I can hear loud and clear what is true for me.” And I don’t want you to ever apologize for knowing what’s true for you and taking action on it.

I thought that paragraph was especially worth bringing to your attention!

This book is part of an upsurge in the quest for connection with the Sacred Feminine that seems to be growing stronger. It is a natural response to the male dominated religions that have held sway for so long and the reinstating of the feminine face of the Divine is absolutely necessary. Meggan encourages readers to band together with other women for support. If it feels nourishing for you to do this then look for sisters to share your spiritual journey with, all-female groups can be nurturing.

My own feeling is that we need to move towards a balance between the masculine and feminine, both in ourselves, our spirituality, and in society at large, so even if you join a girls’ only group don’t exclude male friends from your spiritual quest. Men need to get in touch with their feminine side too and many are drawn to Nature Faiths such as Wicca because there is a greater balance between the Goddess and the God. Ultimately men and women need to unite as equals for the world to become harmonious and whole. Meanwhile finding your inner strength within the Divine Feminine may be just what you need.
