Inauguration Day
Since 1937, January 20th is usually reserved for the inauguration of the President and Vice President of the United States. Previously, with some exceptions, the date had been March 4th. We take a look at each President and the day in history each was sworn into office.

April 30th, 1789 - George Washington became the first President of the United States when he was sworn into office.

March 4th, 1797 - John Adams was sworn into office as the second President after a narrow victory over Thomas Jefferson.

March 4th, 1801 - Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, became the third U.S. President.

March 4th, 1809 - James Madison was sworn into office as the forth President.

March 4th, 1817 - James Monroe was inaugurated as the fifth President.

March 4th, 1825 - John Quincy Adams, son of John Adams, became the sixth U.S. President.

March 4th, 1829 - Andrew Jackson was sworn into office as the seventh President.

March 4th, 1837 - Martin Van Buren became the eighth President of the United States.

March 4th, 1841 - William Henry Harrison was inaugurated as the ninth President.

April 4th, 1841 - John Tyler was sworn in after the death of William H. Harrison, becoming the 10th U.S. President.

March 4th, 1845 - James Polk was sworn in as the 11th President.

March 4th, 1849 - Zachary Taylor became the 12th President.

July 9th, 1850 - Millard Fillmore was sworn in after the death of Zachary Taylor, becoming the 13th President.

March 4th, 1853 - Franklin Pierce was inaugurated as the 14th U.S. President.

March 4th, 1857 - James Buchanan was sworn into office as the 15th President.

March 4th, 1861 - Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th U.S. President.

April 15th, 1865 - Andrew Johnson became the 17th U.S. President after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

March 4th, 1869 - Ulysses S. Grant, former leader of the Union forces during the Civil War, was sworn in as the 18th President of the United States.

March 4th, 1877 - Rutherford B. Hayes was sworn in as the 19th President.

March 4th, 1881 - James A. Garfield became the 20th President.

September 19th, 1881 - Chester A. Arthur became the 21st President after the death of James Garfield from wounds suffered during an assassination attempt.

March 4th, 1885 - Grover Cleveland became the 22nd U.S. President.

March 4th, 1889 - Benjamin Harrison was sworn in as the 23rd President.

March 4th, 1893 - Grover Cleveland began his second term; this time as the 24th U.S. President.

March 4th, 1897 - William McKinley was inaugurated as the 25th President.

September 14th, 1901 - Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as the 26th President after the assassination of William McKinley.

March 4th, 1909 - William H. Taft became the 27th President.

March 4th, 1913 - Woodrow Wilson was sworn in as the 28th President.

March 4th, 1921 - Warren G. Harding became the 29th President.

August 2nd, 1923 - Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th President after the death of Warren G. Harding.

March 4th, 1929 - Herbert Hoover was inaugurated as the 31st U.S. President.

March 4th, 1933 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt was sworn in as the 32nd President of the United States. (He would start the trend of inaugurations taking place on January 20th when he was sworn in for his second term in 1937.)

April 12th, 1945 - Harry S. Truman became the 33rd U.S. President after the death of .

January 20th, 1953 - Dwight D. Eisenhower was sworn in as the 34th President.

January 20th, 1961 - John F. Kennedy became the 35th U.S. President.

November 22nd, 1963 - Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

January 20th, 1969 - Richard M. Nixon, former Vice President under Dwight Eisenhower and opponent of John F. Kennedy in the 1960 elections, became the 37th President.

August 9th, 1974 - Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th U.S. President after the resignation of Richard M. Nixon.

January 20th, 1977 - Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as the 39th President of the United States.

January 20th, 1981 - Ronald Reagan became the 40th President of the United States.

January 20th, 1989 - George Herbert Walker Bush was sworn in as the 41st U.S. President.

January 20th, 1993 - William Jefferson Clinton became the 42nd President of the United States.

January 20th, 2001 - George W. Bush was sworn in as the 43rd U.S. President.
