Today In …

1783 - The Preliminary Articles of Peace was signed, bringing an end to fighting in the Revolutionary War.

1801 - President John Adams nominates John Marshall for the position of Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He would be voted in unanimously in just a few short weeks.

1936 - Edward VIII became King of England after the death of George V. Edward’s own reign would last less than a year when he abdicated the throne to marry U.S. socialite (and divorcee) Wallis Simpson.

1937 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt was sworn in for his second term as President of the United States. This was the first U.S. President sworn in on the 20th of January.

1953 - Dwight D. Eisenhower is sworn is as the 34th President of the United States.

1961- John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th President of the United States.

1969 - Richard Nixon is sworn in as the 37th President of the United States.

1977 - Jimmy Carter is sworn is as the 39th President of the United States.

1981 - Ronald Reagan is sworn in as the 40th President of the United States. Minutes later the 52 U.S. hostages in Iran were freed.

1986 - All states participated in the first annual Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

1989 - George H. W. Bush is sworn in as the 41st President of the United States.

1968 - Film director Roman Polanski married actress Sharon Tate.

1993 - William Jefferson Clinton is sworn in as the 42nd President of the United States.

1996 - Yasser Arafat becomes President of Palestine.

2001 - George W. Bush is sworn in as the 43rd President of the United States.

Edwin Aldrin Jr., a.k.a. “Buzz” Aldrin, the infamous astronaut was born in 1930.

George Burns, the beloved cigar smoking actor and comedian, was born in 1896.

Colin Clive, the actor best known for his scene stealing “It’s Alive! It’s Alive!” line in “Frankenstein” was born in 1898.

DeForest Kelley, best known as Dr. McCoy on “Star Trek” was born in 1920.

Lorenzo Lamas, star of TV’s “Falcon Crest” and “Renegade” was born in 1958.

Bill Maher, the political commentator/comedian, was born in 1956.

Paul Stanley was born in 1952. Stanley is best known as the “Star Child” in the rock band KISS.

Slim Whitman was born in 1924. The musician/singer is best known for such songs as “I Remember You”.

We Said Goodbye To…

James Connolly passed away in 1957. In 1896, Connolly became the first athlete to win a medal in the modern Olympics. He was 88.

Audrey Hepburn the beloved actress of such films as “Sabrina” (1954), “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “My Fair Lady” passed away in 1993. She was 63.

Barbara Stanwyck legendary actress of such films as “Double Indemnity” and star of the TV western “The Big Valley” passed away at the age of 82 in 1990.

Johnny Weissmuller, Olympic champion and actor best known for his role as Tarzan, passed away in 1984 at the age of 79.

1990 - “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” by Michael Bolton

Musical Moments In…

1964 - The Beatles’ first full length album, “Meet the Beatles”, hits America.

1998 - Legendary musical acts The Mamas & Papas and The Eagles are among those inducted into the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame.

1996 - After placing second the previous year, figure skater Michelle Kwan won the U.S. Championships.
