Endometrial Ablation
Guest Author - Carolyn Chambers Clark, ARNP, EdD

What is endometrial ablation

Endometrial ablation is a type of surgery in which the lining of the uterus is cauterized. The procedure is done in the operating room under general anesthesia, but is much less debilitating than hysterectomy. Patients are usually only in the hospital for a day. It is sometimes used to treat fibroids.

For what conditions is endometrial ablation used?

Endometrial ablation is a surgical treatment for heavy bleeding. According to Dr. Christiane Northrup, several of her patients responded very well to the procedure while it didn't work at all for other women. Hysterectomy is another option.

What other natural methods may work?

* Dietary Changes:

+Switch to a low-fat, high-complex carbohydrate diet (plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, fish and soy---see soy gift below) can reduce circulating estrogen, but must be followed for at least 3 months to see results.

+Eliminate all dairy foods (milk, yogurt, buttermilk, cheese, ice cream) even low fat ones for 3 months

*Take supplements that may help: a good multivitamin-mineral supplement, 500 mg of Vitamin C with bioflavonoids and 100,000 IU per day of vitamin A (for 3 months only to avoid toxicity).
