Vanilla Creme Hot Drink

If you're looking for a hot drink that is tasty, has no sugar and has no caffeine, take a look at the Vanilla Creme drink.

The powder comes in a metal tin with a plastic lid, and is $4.19 for a 4.3oz container. It's got about 21 servings in it, with each being four teaspoons worth of powder. Intriguingly, the other drinks of this type are usually three teaspoons each, so in a way you get less per tin out of this than you do other mixes.

Even with it using more teaspoons, the drink seems a little thinner than it should. I think that's because it tastes so creamy, so you then sort of expect it to have that mouthfeel. I think that's why they have you use four teaspoons of mix, to try to give it more texture.

What we do is add in some whipped cream on the top, which thickens it up a little more. It might add an extra carb, probably less - you can always avoid this if you really are super worried about each and every carb.

For nutrition and carbs, this has 3g of carbs total. Remember, it doesn't have sugar added, but it's made from natural substances that have innate carbs in them. It has 35 calories, 2.5g of fat and 50mg of sodium. It has zero protein and zero nutrients.

Now something that struck me as REALLY odd is that this tin that we got at the store says on its bottom "Best used by 24 Jan 2007" - and we got it on Jan 6. I wonder if this means these specific drinks expire quickly - or if nobody is buying these and therefore they sit on the shelves for a long period of time. I'll have to do some research into this to figure out what is going on.

The only date on the container is about the dietary exchange which is copyright 2003, but that may just be when the ADA chose to copyright it, not a reflection of when this tin came out.

So in general, I really like this. It has a mild, pleasant flavor, it has no caffeine, it's perfect for sipping and relaxing. It is warm and soothing. If you're looking for a warm drink to enjoy rather than caffeine-filled tea, coffee or hot cocoa, be sure to give this a try!
