Monkeys in Martial Arts
Guest Author - Caroline Baker

Monkeys are playful creatures, often the joy of many zoo-goers because of their constant activity. They are cruious and willing to experiment with things in their environment, often finding new and creative ways to use them. Monkeys are in constant movement, never stopping even if they get hit.

Martial artists who perform in monkey styles are perhaps the most interesting performers to watch. They will literally take on the air of this creature, crouching down low and holding their "paws" just as the animal would in nature.

As these artist tumble, roll and jump, they maintain a low center of gravity, thus making it very hard to dislodge them. Even if they are thrown off balance, their constant bouncing allows them to recover very quickly. While not the most powerful of the primates, they make up for it by being smart. Attack only when their are opening and staying as far out of reach as possible from the opponent. Their inventive nature will allow them to often use elements in the environment to their advantage.
