Lindt Cancels Low Sugar Chocolates

Lindt Cancels Low Sugar Chocolates
In a move that upset diabetics and dieters around the world, Lindt has decided to cancel its low sugar chocolate line.

I really loved the Lindt low sugar / no sugar added chocolates. They were just as rich and delicious as their normal chocolates. They had a great texture. They weren't zero carb chocolates - there were natural sugars found in many of the ingredients - but their carb count ended up being much lower than the "normal" sugar added line.

I spoke with the shop owner of the Lindt near me. Apparently the low sugar variety was just not selling! It really floored me. Here they were being good corporate citizens, offering a variety of their chocolate that was much more healthy for you. There wasn't any sacrifice at all in flavor. You simply got a more healthy chocolate. And yet people would not buy it. They deliberately chose to ingest the higher sugar variety.

What is the rationale here? Were people simply afraid to try the no sugar variety? Did people figure if they were going to splurge on chocolate, they might as well get fat at the same time? I am completely baffled by this. Could it be that people who care about their health wouldn't bother to spend extra on chocolate in the first place, so they are spending their money buying only healthy foods?

Let me know what your thoughts on this are. It just amazes me when completely wonderful, healthy low sugar products have to be discontinued!
