Bourbon Low Carb Information

Bourbon Low Carb Information
Whiskey, Whisky and Bourbon are all very similar drinks, made in different locations. Pretty much every whiskey, whisky and bourbon on the market - from Crown Royal to Jameson - is zero carbs.

To begin with, a whisky is a fermented grain alcoholic beverage. They can use various grains to make their product - corn, rye, wheat, barley, etc. It's just like wine makers can use different grapes - chardonnay, cabernet - to make a wine.

Most whiskies of the world are spelled with an E, as in "whiskey". The exception is from Scotland and Canada - these two countries do NOT use an E and spell their drinks "whisky". To be even more specific, whiskys from Scotland are called "Scotch" or "Scotch whisky".

Whiskeys from Kentucky are called "bourbon". This was originally because there was a Bourbon county in Kentucky, and it was a local tradition. Regulations now define the area of Kentucky where "real bourbon" can be made.

From one of my readers: "Congress inacted the Bourbon Act of 1964 as an "American Native Spirit." By law, bourbon must contain at least 51% corn and be aged in a charred white oak stave for at least two years. "

While I can say with great certainty that every whisky, whiskey and bourbon *should* be 0g of carbs per serving, here are the ones I have specifically verified for people:

Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey - 0g carbs, 0g fat, 72 calories per 1oz
- from TN of course. It's not Bourbon because it's not from Kentucky!

Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky - 0g carbs
- from Scotland, a blended variety. They use 27 different distilleries.

Southern Comfort - 2.7g carbs per 1oz
- this is a peach flavored liqueur - the peach flavoring is where you get the carbs

Wild Turkey Bourbon - 0g carbs
- from Kentucky, this straight bourbon has zero carbs. I got this information directly from the Wild Turkey folks.

Old Crow Bourbon - 0g carbs
- an ancient bourbon, loved by Ulysses S. Grant.

If you have another type of whisky, whiskey or bourbon that you love, please let me know, and I will research it to add in to this list!

There are many fun recipes that involve bourbon (and its relatives) which are rather low carb.
