Spotlight on Julia Roberts
Although Julia Fiona Roberts began acting in 1987, speaking two whole words of dialogue in the movie "Blood Red" (released in 1989), many people didn't know a thing about her until she rose to stardom for her role as the Vivian, the most lovable prostitute in the world, in the movie "Pretty Woman," opposite Richard Geer. Ten other actresses turned down the role before it went to Julia, who was relatively unknown at the time. Despite previously appearing in "Steel Magnolias", "Satisfaction", and "Mystic Pizza", "Pretty Woman" made her a star.
The Smyrna, Georgia born beauty was nominated for an academy award for her roles in "Steel Magnolias" and "Pretty Woman", but she ultimately won the Oscar for Best Actress in the movie "Erin Brockovich".
Julia Roberts is fantastic at playing strong, independent women who possess amazing amounts of natural charm. Whether she is hard working and focused on her career - as in "Erin Brockovich", "The Pelican Brief", "Conspiracy Theory" - or making her audience fall in love with her character in another wonderful comedy romance - "Notting Hill", "Runaway Bride", "My best Friend's Wedding" - she has the acting chops to pull it off and make us adore her in the process.
When Julia Roberts is showing her sensitive side, as she did in "Dying Young" when she begs the man she loves to fight for his life, she touches her audience straight in the heart. Her performance in "Eat Pray Love", when she prays so hard (and so awkwardly) for the first time - it resonated so deeply that many of us were remembering our own times of absolute despair, when praying was all we had left to do.
Then Julia turns around and surprises us all when she goes all out to be deliciously snarky and fun in her role as the evil stepmother in "Mirror Mirror", a role she obviously had a lot of fun with. It's always exciting to imagine what this talented woman might get up to next.
Julia Roberts was briefly married to Lyle Lovett from 1993 to 1995, a move that came as a surprise to most people. On July 4, 2002, she married Daniel Moder, a cameraman, on her Taos, NM ranch. The couple have three children - twin daughter and son Hazel Patricia and Philiaeus Walter (Finn) who were born on November 28, 2004, and Henry Daniel, born June 18, 2007.
In addition to being a fun and loving wife and mother and a talented actress, Julia Roberts gives her time, energy, and money to support several charitable organizations. She has been associated with UNICEF and in 2000, she was the narrator for a documentary about Rett syndrome called "Silent Angels". The film attempted to educate the audience about this serious neurodevelopmental disorder and what they can do to help. She was announced as the spokeswoman for Earth Biofuels in 2006 and helps to promote the use of renewable fuels, as well.
There is no doubt that Julia Roberts is a beautiful multi-talented actress, humanitarian, wife and mother - she is also as down to earth as can be. When you get the opportunity to catch her in a candid moment, you can see that with Julia, what you see is pretty much what you get. She truly is a Pretty Woman, through and through.
