New Orleans has the reputation of being one of the most haunted cities in America. Many haunted places can be found in the French Quarter. If you want to know where ghosts are in New Orleans, here are some known haunted houses and areas.
At 1447 Constance Street, you can find the haunted Griffon House. This is an old looking building with pillars. It was reputed to be haunted with poltergeist activity at one time. It is now owned by people who say they have not noticed any paranormal activity.
At 1240 Burgundy Street is the Sultan's House also known as the Gardette Laprete House. It is supposed to be very haunted still. This place is where mysterious murders happened behind the heavily guarded walls, gates and doors of this opulent house owned by a sultan. The murders were never solved.
Marie Laveau's house located at 1020 Ann Street is said to be haunted by the ghosts of the famous Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and her followers. It is said that Marie Laveau and other spirits still carry on Voodoo rituals at the house. There is supposed to be another house located on Chartres Street, where Marie Laveau appears sometimes near the fireplace,
Madame Lalaurie's House located at 1140 Royal Street in the French Quarter is a haunted place where tragedies happened in the time of slavery. A woman who owned slaves committed great atrocities against her slaves in the house and it is said that their screams can still be heard.
At the house of Madame Mineurecanal located on 2606 Royal Street in the French Quarter, it is said that the apparition of a woman and her little dog ghost are spotted. Madame Mineurecanal committed suicide by hanging herself at the house after first hanging her dog.
The Beauregard-Keys House is a national landmark located in the French Quarter of New Orleans. It is said that the sounds of fighting have been heard.
The Garden District is considered a haunted area. This district is where the Lafayette Cemetery, former home of Anne Rice and the place where Jefferson Davis died are located. This place is steeped in history.
Military sounds can be heard in Jackson Square, which is located in the French Quarter.
Montgomery Park, which was once called Congo Square, was and is the site of Voodoo rituals. The first Voodoo Queen Sanite' DeDe practiced in her courtyard at Dumaine Street and Chartres Street, near the cathedral that is also in the area.
The Pirates Alley in the French Quarter is called that because the ghost of the wily Pirate Jean Lafitte can sometimes be seen in this area. Pirate's Alley is located between the St. Louis Cathedral and the Old Spanish Governor's Mansion and goes from the Jackson Square at Chartres Street to Royal Street.
