The Pink Panther

Though many have failed to reprise the role of Peter Seller’s Inspector Clouseau, Steve Martin decided to give it a go in a script that he co-wrote. The Pink Panther is a prequel to the original, where the bumbling inspector is put into the era of cell phones and the Internet.

The story in centered around the murder of a famous soccer coach, which leaves his beautiful and famous fiancée, Xania (played by Beyonce Knowles), devastated. But, Xania doesn’t just her husband-to-be; she also loses her engagement ring, the fabled “pink panther” diamond. The scheming Inspector Dreyfus (Kevin Kline) decides to hand over the case to his incompetent inferior, Inspector Clouseau in order to wait for just the right moment to take over the case and win the coveted Medal of Honor. Clouseau’s sidekick, Ponton (Jean Reno) and secretary, Nicole (Emily Mortimer) come together to help him tackle the case, which involves destroying evidence, insulting victims and fumbling through names and pronunciation of words.

Steve Martin does return to what he knows best, slapstick physical comedy, which we have always loved in the past. However, The Pink Panther really misses the mark when it comes to being funny. The role of Inspector Clouseau may have been reprised, but unfortunately, the funny forgot to follow.
