Securing Your Home For A Hurricane
Guest Author - Kathy Clark

As hurricane season approaches, it’s time to begin preparations if you live where the storms are possible. Doing everything possible to protect your home now, will allow the focus to be on the safety of your family when a storm is headed your way.

Below is a list of items to check along with supplies to consider. It’s much wiser to purchase these items now while they are available rather than wait until a storm is eminent and supplies become unavailable.

1. Check items in your yard such as sheds, swing sets, boats and trailers.
Are they secure and do you have the proper tie downs ready to be installed.
2. Check tree limbs.
Trim back any branches that are either touching your house or fence. Also trim any branches that could touch during heavy rains or wind. Remove dead branches.
3. Measure doors and windows.
Purchase the wood and screws now, cut it to fit and mark each section for quick placement when needed.
4. Inspect gutters.
Repair any damaged sections and make sure the downspout opening and surrounding area is clear.
5. Roof turbines.
If you have these, purchase the supplies necessary for removing them and sealing the hole.
6. Outdoor patio furniture and ornaments.
Decide now where they will be stored. Clean out the chosen area and use it now for storing ice chests, generator, batteries and other items that you will need if you choose to ride out the storm.

If you don’t know how to turn the water, power and gas off to your home, now is the time to educate yourself. Uncover the water meter now and keep it free of overgrown grass. Remember that before opening the electric box, always knock on it with the back of your hand. That way if there is any stray electrical current, it will throw your hand back rather than attaching you to it. If you decide to turn off the gas, find out ahead of time whether you can safely turn it back on or if you are required to call in a professional. Whatever you do, be safe.
