Director Kunal Kohli, who seems to gravitate toward controversial topics (at least by Indian standards) is the mind behind another Indian love story, but one vastly different than traditional tales.

Kajol is Zooni Ali Beg, a blind woman who has lived her entire life being protected by her father, never going anywhere on her own. Finally she leaves the safety of her home in a small town and heads for the big city to explore.

Aamir Khan ("Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India," "The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey") is Rehan Qadri, a tour guide who skips from city to city and woman to woman. When he meets Zooni, he is enchanted by her innocence and beauty and she is smitten with his worldliness. Although her friends caution her against Rehan, and despite the fact that she barely knows him, Zooni immediately begins a romance with the charming tour guide.

Before long Zooni completely trusts Rehan, and even agrees to sleep with him before they are married, which is a taboo in her society. When Rehan asks Zooni's parents for permission to marry her, they agree, against their better judgement. Soon a tragedy reveals that Rehan holds a terrible secret that has the potential to destroy Zooni's world.

Starring actress Kajol has an interesting geneology; for four generations, her family has been in Bollywood. Her mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother were all huge stars in their day! She is required to be quite a chameleon in this role - evolving from a naive young girl into a disappointed bride.

Aamir Khan, a diverse actor who is very picky about his roles, was an unexpected choice for this role. A former tennis champion, he is already being praised for his role in this film.
