Superman (Brandon Routh) has been away for 5 years to attend to the tragic remains of his home planet, and in the search for survivors from Krypton. In that time, Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has had an asthmatic son, Jason (Tristan Leabu), and is engaged to her dashing fiance, Richard (James Marsden), who she does not want to marry. Maybe because of her unresolved feelings for the real man of her dreams, the Man of Steel.

Like Superman, Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) has been out of the spotlight, due to some prison time. However, now that he's free, he's more determined that ever to make his mark on the world. So, he heads for Superman's Fortress of Solitude and riles through the crystals with an intent on creating a new continent. But, he also intends on destroying a few others along the way. Newly returned, Superman will oppose his nemesis. However, he better watch out because Lex is definitely ready for him.
