Lorena Ochoa - Golfer of the Year

Lorena Ochoa wins the Vare Trophy with her six time LPGA tour winnings. This award was for the lowest scoring average. She also won the Rolex Player of the Year Award and ended the year with the ADT official leading money list. “It has been the best season”, Ochoa said, “It has been a dream season, as I try to play aggressive and try to make a lot of birdies. It has been a very consistent year for me, just trying to focus on being under 70 each round. That is my goal and the scores just came down.”

Ochoa, who owns nine LPGA titles, Lorena is 25 years old and shot 20 rounds this year at 66 or better and is the first player from Mexico to win these awards. She mentioned that she did not have a favorite course her scores came on 16 different courses this year. Ochoa scored more in the 60s second-most in the history of the Tour. Part of the reason Ochoa earned her first Vare Trophy is that she made more birdies and eagles than anyone else and hit more greens in regulation than any other golfer. A little bit of luck never hurts either she remarked as she made a double eagle in the final-round at the Evian Masters.

Ochoa turned in one of the most prolific seasons in LPGA history. She also became the first player in LPGA history other than Sorenstam to exceed the $2 million mark in season earnings. The $2,592,872 Ochoa earned this year represents the second-highest amount won by any player in a single season. With such an outstanding record she is well deserved of wining the Vare Trophy and becoming the Player of the Year.

I watched on the Golf Channel as she was awarded the Sportsman of the year in Mexico her home country. Her trophy was presented to her by President Fox and praised her accomplishments. It is good to hear of woman golfers who have become so successful and these awards go to their dedication and work at improve their talents. Since Annika Sorenstan and her great success it is good to read about another talented golfer winning these awards. The LPGA has many talented golfers, so check up on these talented ladies and follow their winning ways. I congratulated Lorena Ochoa and may her success continue for years to come.
