Get Out ”Taking the audience on a Jungian journey into the collective unconscious by using the shadow as a metaphor for the primal self that gets repressed by the modern persona and also by using an underground setting and labyrinth office design to represent both the depths of the psyche and the dungeon-like isolation of our increasingly mechanistic society which prevents people from finding satisfying work or meaningful connections with others.” from Shadows Pt. 2 part of The Complex Tour by The Blue Man Group. I love this quote. I love it even more, because when it is said during their concert it is given in a completely deadpan voice. Picture a giant screen with one word flashing up at a time while a voice drones the statement with no inflection – and then the music starts. The song that follows is The Current which furthers the theme of becoming so lost in one’s work that one forgets the outside world ever even existed. Here’s an excerpt from that song: “Current flows, but I don’t know where it goes I don’t care, I just get it there Took this job ‘cause I needed one Now it’s seven years since I’ve seen the sun All day long, I’m underground” How many of us go to work each and every day, then drive home on auto-pilot, sit at the table for dinner (or worse – in front of the TV), then get ready for bed and start the next day all over again? Even if we have families, we barely speak, because we are so exhausted. But actually exhaustion is not truly the right word. We are not physically tired, we are emotionally drained – our souls have been bled to numbness. It is hard to care about anything at the end of the day. Why are sit-coms so popular? Because we need someone else to make us laugh. I heard a beautiful sound the other day – my 6 year old son was laughing. My daughter was tickling him and he was just laughing like crazy. I got up from my computer and went to the door and just watched them wrestle around on the floor and laugh. My friend has a 3 month old baby. I love to hear that baby giggle. There is no more joyous sound in the world than that. We were driving home from church the other night and my daughter goes, “Wow, look at that!” It was the sunset. We have had a lot of rain here in Georgia, but this day we had gotten a break. The clouds were in some amazing formations, though. The sky was shot through with pink, orange, gold, and some other colors that I don’t even know how to describe. We pulled into our driveway, got out of the car and just stood outside looking. The air smelled clean, there was a wonderful breeze, and everything was just perfect. It was something we were never going to get from sitting in front of the television. This weekend we have planned to go up to Helen, Georgia to go horse riding. I have never been riding before; I will probably kill myself (or at least my back). But Helen in autumn is one of the most beautiful places on this Earth in my opinion. So if I do wind up in the ER, at least it will be in a gorgeous setting! In this day and age we have trapped our spirits behind bricks and cement. Is it any wonder that stress is out of control, blood pressure is up and heart attacks are on the rise? Let yourself out into the world. Enjoy the glories of nature and family. Sing and dance and pick some flowers. Get out and let your spirit soar. Like The Blue Man Group says in The Complex “Gotta get up, gotta get up, gotta get up and go”
