September 11, 2001 A Great Abandon

In remembrance of the men and women who answered the Greater Calling on that morning in September. To those who helped, carried or dragged the injured out of the burning buildings and then without thought of their own safety, returned to find others in need. And to those on United Flight 93, who chose death over fear, and saved many more innocent lives. I want to say that I am in awe of them. Without concern for themselves, they rushed with Great Abandon to the cause of Christ.
They brought into reality the teachings of Jesus that I would hope to internalize, putting others before themselves and even before the thought of self preservation.

Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.Philippians 2:3&4

Jesus gave the ultimate example to follow when He went to the cross to save us from eternal death and eternity without God.
Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing;* he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form.* And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross Philippians 2:5 - 8

We each have a calling in God’s kingdom, something already planned for us. For most of us it is in simple, everyday concerns that will never make a newspaper headline, but are sure to be recorded in God’s notebook.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10

Remember that God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:13
It is our job to prayerfully ask Him what He has prepared for us and, without thought of ourselves, to rush with Great Abandon into with whatever it is.
It is my prayer that, when confronted with the choice of self-concern or concern for another’s welfare, my response will be as automatic as that of those incredible heroes of 9/11.
