Sanctuary Returns On SyFy

The second season of “Sanctuary” returns on SyFy Friday, October 9 at 10 p.m. ET. This series, which shoots almost entirely on the green screen, details the work of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a scientist who tries to protect and investigate the secrets of a group of strange beings, called Abnormals, that hide among humans.

The cast features Robin Dunne as forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman and Emilie Ullerup as Dr. Magnus’ daughter Ashley. Joining the cast this season is Agam Darshi as Kate Freelander, a con artist and thief. Ryan Robbins plays tech wiz Henry and Christopher Heyerdahl is John Druitt. The show was created by Damian Kindler, whose credits include two “Stargate” series.

NOTE: SPOILERS AHEAD

Tonight’s episode is titled “End of Nights Part I.” Ashley is being held prisoner by the Cabal, and Dr. Magnus continues to search for her. She and Druitt reach out to all their international contacts to find her and to discover what the Cabal’s ultimate plan is. Meanwhile, Ashley’s months-long incarceration has been fraught with injections and tests, and she is undergoing a painful and strange mutation as part of the Cabal’s diabolical mission.

When Zimmerman investigates the theft of important, top-secret information from Interpol, he’s surprised to find that Ashley is the lone culprit. He informs Dr. Magnus, and finds out there is a connection between the stolen information and an old case that involved genetic manipulation of five orphans. Now the team’s goal is to locate these kids--now adults--and keep them from falling into the hands of the Cabal.

Although they are able to locate one of the orphans, they’re outwitted by a thief-for-hire named Kate Freelander, who has connections to the Cabal. As they begin to solve the mystery, Kate contacts the Cabal leader (Linda Boyd) for payment, and realizes she’s now a persona non grata with the Cabal for allowing herself to be caught briefly. She takes refuge at the Sanctuary and gives them information. The team is destined to meet Ashley again, but she’s not the girl they once knew.

The next episode, which airs October 16 at 10 p.m. ET, is called “End of Nights Part II.” The team is still trying to get more information from Kate. Cabal leader Dana contacts Dr. Magnus with an ultimatum: Save Ashley and hand over the Sanctuary Network, or fight. The Cabal’s greatest weapon is Ashley, and when the Cabal begins to destroy Sanctuaries around the world defeat seems horrible and imminent. There’s an ultimate weapon, but how can Dr. Magnus destroy her own daughter?
