LPGA Golf Open

LPGA Golf Open
This past weekend the LPGA help their Open Golf Tournament at Pine Needles Golf Course in South Carolina. It was an interesting tournament to watch as the players worked to beat the course and win. It was a struggle for many as they found trouble and fell back of the pack such as Kerrie Webb and Annika Sorestam. I was expecting them to put up low scores. It even found Michelle Wie withdraw yet again for an injured wrist. This young gal needs to give her wrist a rest and get her game back to tournament level. She is a great one to watch but when she is in pain it does not bode well for a good score.

This was the first time there was a tie between the American and Korean women golfers of 24 each in the 2007 Women’s Golf Tournament who made the cut. It seems the American women golfers have been low in number at many women tournaments. America is having more and more younger golfers winning their way into the tournaments. The youngest American ever was twelve year old Alexis Thompson to qualify for the Open. Also seventeen year old Mina Harigae was entered after she won the U. S. Amateur Public Links event. This showed up as 7 of the 10 players were under 30 years old at the U. S. Solheim Cup team last year.

The winner of this great event was Cristie Kerr and the final round proved she could come through with a victory. She was up against Lorena Ochoa of Mexico who is listed as the number one player in women’s golf. Lorena had trouble with the last few holes by hitting in the rough and sand while Christie was making clutch par putts but the 18 foot birdie putt on Hole 14 was one that put her in the lead. Her putting was amazing to watch.

Christie Kerr is a good friend of Morgan Pressel who was the youngest player to win a major championship event at age 18. Her win was at the Kraft Nabisco championship and the first American to win a major event since 1999. These two friends live in Florida and both came to the LPGA straight from high school. Kerr came out ten years ago when it wasn’t the popular thing to do. Now we have many more teenagers taking up the game and becoming excellent golfers. The Women’s tour can use these bright and talented golfers as it helps the game and makes watching the tournament so much more enjoyable.

This win by Christie Kerr was the first time Americans won multiple majors in one year since 2000. With so many world women golfers joining the LPGA the American golfers are out to do their best in winning again. Our congratulations to Christie Kerr for her win and wish her the best in coming events. Always nice to see new faces in the winning circle and we wish all of them much success in future events.
