Book Review-Rock Your World With The Divine Mother Book review of “Rock Your World With The Divine Mother” Married couples are on spiritual searches. A new book by Sondra Ray is an interesting read for these couples. The book, “Rock your World With The Divine Mother,” is a spiritual journey book. The idea of a Divine Feminine has always been a staple of many religious and spiritual belief systems. It is especially relevant in a world where people, especially women, are tired and dissatisfied with male-oriented and dominated religions. Historically, women have been relegated to the “back burner” as far as clergy were concerned. Due to the mythological story of Adam and Eve, women were considered to be “inferior in intellect and spiritual wholeness.” Of course there were exceptions, but those poor “holy” women were sanitized to the point of being sexless, self-sacrificing, with no vestige of real humanness about them at all. So finding books about a Divine Feminine is a joy and crucial to those who have found nothing sustainable in “mainstream” religions. The Divine Mother is many-named, from The Virgin Mary in Catholicism to Quan Yin in Buddhism, Pele in the religious beliefs of the Hawaiian Islands, to the Goddess in Paganism; the list of names and beliefs goes on and on. That all beliefs have at one time honored the Divine Feminine is evident from historical records from past civilizations. Ms. Ray’s book is an acknowledgement of the power and compassion of the Goddess. It is a return journey to what was a common belief. The idea behind the book is that we all would benefit immensely if we would only return to the Feminine Power which incorporates love and compassion more than male dominated deities. A notable inclusion is the transcript of Her Holiness Sri Mata Amritanandamayi’s address to the 2002 Global Peace Initiative of Women Religious and Spiritual Leaders in Geneva that best articulates, calmly, lucidly, and with fit examples and calls to arms, the power that arrives when one embraces the spiritual: ‘“Anyone—woman or man—who has the courage to overcome the limitations of the mind can attain the state of universal motherhood. The love of awakened motherhood is a love and compassion felt, not only towards one’s own children, but towards all people, animals and plants, rocks and rivers—a love extended to all of nature, all beings.”’ This is an inspiring directive but one that some may find a bit hard to attain. Not all people have strong maternal feelings. The book is an excellent source of information on the Divine Mother for anyone searching for “something” more in a belief system. To those who are beginning their search, I recommend it.
