Yet More Top Romance Movie Couples

Yet More Top Romance Movie Couples
And finally, the last part of this article trilogy on the top romance movie couples.

12. Witness (1985)
Peter Weir’s “Witness” is an action film, a love story, a suspense-thriller and a thoughtful examination of the Amish, all rolled up into one purely fantastic movie. Kelly McGillis (another “whatever happened to” actor) plays the bewildered Amish mother Rachel Lapp whose son witnesses a cop being murdered in a Philadelphia bus station’s washroom. Harrison Ford is your typical hard-nosed and cynical cop assigned to the case. He ends up hiding out with the Amish family he meant to protect. His difficult adjustment to the “Plain” life makes for some funny moments. The romance is sweet and very tender, proving that not every love story needs to end up in the bedroom. “Witness” won the Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Screenplay.

13. Bull Durham (1988)
I’m not a baseball fan but even I loved this movie, starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. Kevin is “Crash” Davis, the “old guy” catcher brought in to groom “Nuke” Laloosh for the big league. Nuke’s got a golden arm but his head is strictly fools’ gold. Susan is the baseball groupie Annie Savoy who takes a young player under her, er, wing every season. But this season she didn’t count on Crash running interference. Yes, I know that’s a football term. A very funny and sexy flick. Also noted for being the movie where longtime couple Susan and Tim met.

14. Morocco (1931)
This was Marlene Dietrich’s first American movie and she vamps it up as the cynical nightclub singer Amy Jolly. Gary Cooper plays devil-may-care French Foreign Legionnaire Tom Brown. Feeling their affair is doomed as the legion prepares to leave, Amy decides to marry a rich admirer instead. Caused a bit of a stir at the time for two reasons: Marlene in top hat and tails, and Marlene in top and tails kissing a woman on the lips. Pure melodrama.

And there you have it. Hopefully, you’ve discovered some great movies you have missed the first time around or maybe re-discovered a forgotten oldie but goodie. Did you agree or disagree with my choices? What do you think I missed? Honestly, there are so many great flicks out there, it was difficult narrowing the list down to 14.

Happily, every single one of the movies mentioned in this trilogy of articles is available on DVD. (However, “Morocco” is available only as part of the Marlene Dietrich Glamour Collection. But you get four other movies – good and not quite so – for the price of one so it’s a bargain.)
