The Chihuahua
Guest Author - Kimberly Cannon

Should you have a desire to search for a pet, think about a dog... then deem one that is a mini but mighty... the ever-loving Chihuahua. Why you say? Well, considering I own one, makes writing this article a la perfect. Why are Chihuahuas so lovable, charismatic and cuddly?

The most important things people know about Chihuahuas are their small size and their lively behavior. Although it's known as the world's smallest dog, many can reach a mature weight of 6 pounds. They are small in dimension, but their character outweighs their sting. In other words, Chihuahuas sometimes forget that as small as they are, they cannot take on the entire world or anyone who invades its territory. This little creature has a growl as soaring as a lion and an attitude to match. Unless a Chihuahua is familiar with you, you just might meet up with the big, bad, Chihuahua. My family owns a Chihuahua and everyone from the mailman to family members that don't frequent our house, has met with the challenge our little one gives our visitors. Talk about a guard dog!

Speaking of a guard dog, the person most familiar with and around a Chihuahua, is the person that will be most protected. The Chihuahua demands personal space and time with its owner, so unless you have the time to spend with this particular pet, consider another type of dog. Much patience and tender loving care goes with having this little character around. Its small stature, with a head to match, demands lots of attention and play throughout the day.

Play Time:
Chihuahuas love to play and will enjoy a bunch of toys that their little teeth will gnarl into like a real bone. They have their own favorite toys but would rather enjoy an old house slipper or a sock to shake like a rag doll - back and forth. And talk about a chase... they love to chase after you at fast speed but will slowly back down and rest after having a few laps of water. Play only lasts for a moment then its back to their sleeping bed, cuddly old blanket or your lap, for one of many naps per day.

Description:
This graceful little character has a head the size of a small apple with large, erect ears that mimic Yoda of Star Wars. The big eyes are far apart in some Chihuahuas. Nose color can range from black to brown to blonde. Its body is quite long and the neck is slightly arched with a wagging tail that always stands up ... except during times of shame or becoming too cold. Some Chihuahuas have long coats and some have short coats. The long coated ones can sometimes be mistaken for Pomeranians. Our Chihuahua has a smooth coat that is glossy and soft. Their colors are widespread. Chihuahuas don't usually shed but expect to give a brushing once or twice per week during the winter months.

Speaking of winter months, Chihuahuas do not like the cold.... not in the least. Expect to see them shiver. The smaller they are, the more they shiver and since cooler weather is not their forte, take your feisty one shopping for a cozy sweater.

Intelligence:
Chihuahuas are so intelligent. At least mine is! Intuitiveness is a high point about these dogs. When no one notices that I'm sad, my Chihuahua always knows and hovers over me like a mother. They appreciate being treated humanely as their characteristics are seemingly created for this type of care. They will always let an owner know just how much they care. Most Chihuahuas easily learn commands like sit, stay and come.

Chihuahuas are picky eaters. They'll pick out their favorites in kernel flavored foods and leave the less preferred pieces on the floor. Some dogs will eat anything, but not this breed. Choose a quality brand, and once you find the perfect food that your Chihuahua enjoys, stay with that one.

All and all, if you love to spoil your pets, the Chihuahua is definitely the dog for you. You and your Chihuahua will love all the fancy clothes and amenities to dress him/her in... especially for the holidays. Chihuahuas are made to be pampered. They enjoy the attention and fuss about their appearance.

Children and Chihuahuas:
Although Chihuahuas may look like toy dogs, they most certainly are not. We found out the hard way. Small children and Chihuahuas are a bad mix, simply because these tiny dogs do not like loud noises and do not appreciate getting hit unintentionally. They don't like to be chased or handled roughly. Close supervision with small children could make the experience for the Chihuahua more congenial. As for older children, Chihuahuas usually do well with this age group. As I stated before, the Chihuahua's growl will let people know to leave it alone.

It is imperative to choose a dog that fits your home, lifestyle and family... not just for its cute appearance.
Should you consider bringing a Chihuahua into your home, consider these last notes:

  1. Find a reputable breeder. Pay attention to the breeder's home. A good breeder will raise the pups inside their home - in a clean environment.
  2. Pay attention to the dog's parents. The parents' health is an indicator of your future dog's health. If the mommie parent is extra feisty, the one you select might carry those genes as well.
  3. Watch the puppies in action. The breeder should allow you to see how they interact with one another. That cute little black pup in the corner that looks timid may be the bossiest one of the pack. You can tell a lot about a puppy's temperament by watching its interaction with other puppies and with the breeder. Do not choose a fearful, aggressive and nervous puppy.

Once you've found your perfect Chihuahua, look forward to a sensible and endearing companion for many years to come!
